Are you curious as to why you are starting to lose your hair? This article will go over the most common reasons for hair loss and what you can do not only help prevent future hair loss, but also help stimulate new hair growth.
Common Reasons For Hair Loss
Many people who suffer from hair loss have unique medical conditions such as cancer, thyroid disease, and skin disease. Other people can also loose their hair because of a certain medication they are taking, if they are going through chemotherapy or other type of radiation, or because they have been exposed to certain chemicals and toxins. It’s also pretty common for women to start losing their hair during pregnancy, menopause, or at other times where hormonal and nutritional changes occur.
You may not believe it, but some people start to loose their hair when they are dealing with too much stress. The stress that they deal with is obviously more severe than the everyday stress we may experience (i.e. a horrible car accident, a death in the family, etc.).
But out of all the different reasons for hair loss, there is one that is most common by far. In fact, it’s considered to be the primary cause of male and female pattern baldness. What I am referring to is heredity.
That’s right. It was actually determined a very long time ago that you were going to eventually start to go bald and loose your hair. You most likely inherited a gene that gave you a higher than normal sensitivity to a certain hormone or androgen called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. This androgen binds to your follicles, causing them to get smaller and smaller until there is nothing left for it to do but fall out. But unlike the other 50-100 of your hairs than fall out of a daily basis, these ones never grow back again.
So what are your best options for fighting back against hair loss and balding? Besides getting a surgical procedure done like hair transplants or laser surgery, there are really only two types of treatments that are worth using (both of which are the only substances approved by the FDA):
1. Finasteride (or Propecia)- Being the most recently approved treatment, Finasteride is considered to be the best option for most people. It’s a prescription medication that is taken orally on a daily basis. Many men (especially younger men) refuse to take it though because it’s known to cause adverse sexual side effects like impotence, erectile dysfunction, and decreased libido.
2. Minoxidil (what Rogaine contains)- This is a topically applied substance and you don’t need a prescription in order to get it. It doesn’t have as high of a success rate as Finasteride does, but it’s still considered to be a top choice for treating most cases of hair loss and balding. I know that when I start losing my hair and have to finally pick a treatment, I’ll try this one first simply because it’s been shown to be effective and it’s the safest option.
